WHAT IS A TEXT CORRECTION?

WHAT IS A TEXT CORRECTION?

From our point of view, the correction or linguistic revision of a work or text (regardless of gender) is an essential step not only before publishing it, but also before making it known to anyone who is going to make a judgment of value or make a decision that affects your future (editorials, competitions …).

The author, in the first place, and the publisher, if it exists, have the responsibility to offer the reader a work without defects, worthy of someone dedicating their time to read it. No author or publisher wants their potential readers to associate their name or brand with a product of low quality, mediocre, sloppy, made in a hurry or plagued with errors. On the other hand, errors in a text annoy the reader, distract him from reading, push him out of the content forcing him to repair while reading the author’s oversights.

A polished text, finished and free of obvious errors says a lot about who wrote it, conveys seriousness and demonstrates the effort, dedication and commitment that its author has put into it. Also your respect for the reader.

Orthotypographical and style correction

In Letters Own correct all kinds of texts (novels, stories, stories, plays, comics, doctoral theses, academic articles, informative or non-literary texts …). In principle only complete and finished texts are corrected. If you need the correction of a fragment or have doubts about the service you need (correction, translation, reading report, editing), contact us and we will advise you.

This service is available both for works written originally in English and for works translated into English from other languages (if it is a translation, please tell us). If you want us to translate your work once corrected, ask us.

TYPES OF TEXT CORRECTION

Orthotypographical correction

The ortotipogr√°fica correction is the linguistic correction that serves so much to correct the orthographic, syntactic, grammatical and typographical errors as to unify the typographical resources (capital letters, italics, quotes, bold). During the process of orthotypographical correction, the principles of aesthetics, functionality, readability and communicative effectiveness are applied to the text.

The correction is applied to all the textual elements of the work (including footnotes, tables or graphs, footnotes, index and bibliography).

During the orthotypographical correction the corrector detects and eliminates or repairs:

  • Spelling mistakes.
  • Transpositions or omissions of characters.
  • Inappropriate or inconsistent use of quotes.
  • Syntactic and grammatical errors.

Accentuation errors, in the use of abbreviations and symbols or in the writing of figures and magnitudes.

Incorrect application of capital letters, italics, bold, small caps, superscript and subscript.

Punctuation failures (ellipses, dialogue scripts, clauses, etc.).

Incorrect targets (spacing, indents …) and misalignments.

Disposition (paragraph followed or apart) and incorrect punctuation of appointments.

Style correction

The correction of style is a literary correction that acts on the syntactic, grammatical and expressive planes in order to polish the text and optimize its resources. It deals with those aspects that are not errors from the normative point of view but that negatively affect the work. We eliminate imperfections and highlight the virtues of the text endowing it with the expressiveness, richness, coherence and precision necessary to achieve a clear and fluid reading. All this avoiding overcorrection and preserving the author’s own style, because it is not about rewriting the text, nor about an editing.

The purpose of the style correction is:

Ensure correct use of verb tenses.

Rephrase confused or erroneous sentences and purge ambiguities or contradictions.

Repair gaps (add missing terms and delete unnecessary ones).

Correct syntactic inconsistencies (concordance, correlation of verb tenses, prepositions …) and give fluidity to the text with the most precise resources (discursive connectors, subordinates, etc.).

Eliminate lexical errors, eliminate clunkers, repetitions, redundancies and alliterations.

Eliminate errors and inaccuracies of vocabulary.

Adapt the text to established uses or to a style book.

Fit the text to the reader to whom it is intended (location) so that it sounds genuine and understandable.

Preparation of the index, where appropriate.
